The course is assessed through a combination of multiple choice theory exams, worksheets and observations of practical skills. You will create a portfolio of evidence throughout the course.
The Anatomy and Physiology for Exercise & Health unit is assessed via a multiple choice theory paper, which consists of 40 questions and you are required to gain a 70% pass mark (28 correct answers), within a 60 minute time period. Please see above if you feel you may be eligible for additional time during exams.
The Applying the Principals of Nutrition to a Physical Activity Programme also requires you to complete a multiple choice theory exam consisting of 40 questions which require a 70% pass mark (28 correct answers), within a 60 minute time period. You will also need to complete some knowledge questions and a case study. The knowledge questions are set externally by CYQ. The case study is externally set by CYQ also and is in a template format, you will need to base it on an apparently healthy adult providing appropriate nutritional advice.
You also need to answer some set knowledge questions for Programme and Delivering Personal Training sessions. You will need to produce a client profile, includes fitness tests, goal setting, client testimony, and programme cards (4 of these in detail) and then a 12 week overview outlining weeks 1, 6 and 12, evaluation forms and a goals review. You will then need to deliver a planned personal training session which includes full planning and preparation. Your teaching needs to include a 2 cardiovascular methods of training and 4 resistance methods of training from a set list. These will be discussed throughout your course. This will be followed by an evaluation of the taught session.
For the Business Skills for the Fitness Profession award, you will need to produce a business plan for your fitness business, which is covers a set marking criteria. There is a case study pro-forma which can be followed and mark sheet to help you create a business plan. You will need address business objectives, SWOT analysis, conduct market research, produce a 12 month cash flow and a 12 month promotional plan.
Award in Sports Conditioning requires a case study where you need to gather information related to your client and the sporting event. Analyse the sport and write a periodised programme and detailed session plan.
Instructing Outdoor Fitness requires you to plan a session of a minimum of 30 minutes to a group of apparently healthy adults. The plan must have goals and aims the session, take health and safety into account and have an appropriate warm up, main component and cool down. You must then teach the planned session to a group of appropriate adults either by a direct observation from an assessor or via video evidence. Finally an evaluation of the session must be completed.
